Rabbit, Rabbit: Bunny Covers Multiply Like Rabbits
A ranking of book cover rabbits I want to shove my face in.
I am a long time rabbit owner. They might be the third most common pet in the US, but unlike cats or dogs, they are extremely difficult to have as pets. Rabbits require a lot of special knowledge, sure, but honestly, it’s the patience that gets you. If you own a rabbit, it’s like having a very destructive toddler living at the level of your home where anything remotely unsecured becomes chewable. Boxes? Chewed. Woodwork? Chewed. Power cords? I buy mine in bulk because if you look away for one moment, it becomes spicy hay.
But rabbit owners also know the uniqueness of these creatures when it comes to how loveable they are. You might not always feel that love reciprocated, but then you get to witness your rabbit flop over or happy dance around the living room and you know they’re happy.
Though the trend is not new, rabbits have seen more and more face time as cover models across age categories in the last 5 or so years. I’ve kept an eye on them, in part out of interest of the trend and in part out of wondering whether or not this is might be a rabbit I would feel comfortable petting and begging to come cuddle.
I thus present five book cover rabbits, past and present, with commentary on whether or not they would make the perfect snuggle bunny. Note that I have done my best to credit the cover designers but publishing still frequently fails to make this information readily available with information about the book itself.
I loved Rabbits for Breakfast by Binnie Kirschenbaum when it came out, and I continue to come back to this book cover. This is not a book about bunnies, though it is a book about a main character named Bunny. Every timie I look at this cover, though, I think the rabbit has on a tiny pair of wire-rimmed glasses and it doesn’t. The lack of glasses throws me off. I rank this rabbit a 4 on a scale of 5, losing a point for not having the glasses but staying high on the list since it reminds me of my childhood stuffed rabbit, Guy.
